Since the beginning of time, there have always been valuable tools used to help organizations recruit the right talent for any purpose. Having top talent always reaps its rewards. To have a little fun let’s take a look at the recruiting techniques of the Lannisters from Game of Thrones. In Game of Thrones, Cersei Lannister chooses Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane to represent her at a trial by combat. In a trial by combat, the victorious party is held to have had his or her case judged fairly by the gods and has proven their innocence in the eyes of the gods. If the accused or their champion is defeated, however, then they are considered guilty and condemned to death.
Cersei Needed Recruiting Tools
Cersei, with all her family’s money and power, could’ve chosen anyone but she wanted the most dangerous fighter in all of the seven kingdoms to represent her. Here is where the recruiting comes in. She had a need for the very best person for the job as her risk was losing her own life. When I think about her recruiting tools, it’s obvious that her tools are vastly different than modern day recruiters as she didn’t simply email or send a LinkedIn message with hopes for a reply.
The Lannister Way
Cersei’s family is one of the best in recruitment and will do whatever is needed to coerce the candidate to take the opportunity. Recruitment options included convincing them by force, offering a land package and lordship, perhaps even dangling marriage into the Lannister family, loads of money and/or jewels, or using freedom as a motivator. Creative options for the Lannisters seem endless. But if the Lannisters had to recruit someone for a trial by combat today how would they find their candidate?
How Not To Be Effective
The Lannister’s wouldn’t send out a spam email messages to thousands of people that don’t quite fit the role and they wouldn’t use an automated telephone system to play pre-recorded messages about this great opportunity. They wouldn’t likely find Ser Gregor’s resume sitting in Monster waiting for someone to find him. To be effective, they would have to be more proactive and focused.
Sometimes, you just need to bring in the experts! The Lannisters would certainly call on their most trusted recruitment advisers to do the following:
- Create a qualifications list that would indicate the type of person that could win the trial
- Search social media to see if anyone rose to the top as a supreme warrior
- Reach out to fighting groups, both public and private, to determine if any legends exist
- Find track records of potential fighters using cutting edge methods
Through all this searching, candidates would rise to the top and I would suspect that, in a modern times, they would call, email, InMail, stop by, send a private jet over to meet with them and explain the opportunity with as much enthusiasm as possible. They would follow up after the meeting and keep lines of communication open, because sometimes it’s just not the right time to switch jobs and fight in a trial by combat–but maybe next time. Or, they would simply send over an army, capture the fighter and/or threaten them to fight or die, and move on with the next piece of business.
